35 years after the tragedy

On November, 13rd 1985, an eruption of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano (Colombia) caused an avalanche of mud, water, rocks, and trees reached Armero, sweeping away everything in its path and burying the population and the life of the municipality as it had been known up to that moment.

The tragedy killed 24,442 people.

What are the aims of the collaboration?

Volcano Active Foundation unite for the establishment of an international protocol for the management of minors during eruptions, we wish to recognize the Armero tragedy for a better management of disaster risk at the international level.

What is the Armando Armero Foundation?

Armando Armero is a non-profit foundation that has been working for more than ten years in the reconstruction of the memory of Armero (Colombia), a town devastated in 1985 after the eruption of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano that affected the northern part of Tolima. Since 2012, she has been leading the investigation “Niños perdidos de Armero, ¡Una causa que nos toca a todos!”

The foundation has a compendium of 501 recorded stories of family members who are searching for their children. Of these stories, 137 cases have been verified that the children got out of Armero alive.

To date, the Foundation has conducted 4 reunions.
