LA PALMA ERUPTION, Canary Islands
Cumbre vieja volcano erupted for the time in 50 years
The Cumbre Vieja volcano on the Spanish island of La Palma, in the Canary Islands archipelago, which has been under heavy surveillance for days due to intense seismic activity, erupted on Sunday 19th September of 2021 for the first time in 50 years.
The eruption began at around 15:00 local time (14:00 GMT) and sent lava flowing down the slope towards the villages at up to 700 meters per hour.
The volcano is located in the south of the island of La Palma, which has about 80,000 inhabitants.
On 21st September, within a few hours lava flows had covered more than 100 hectares, destroying more than 180 houses, 300 farm buildings and displacing more than 6,500 people.
In the event of an eruption, information and communication are the first elements of a good management of the rescue operations.
This PEVOLCA alert situation does not imply any risk for the population, but it is advisable to be vigilant and to be informed of the communiqués of the civil protection authorities through the official channels, @112canarias and the media.
Do not listen to the rumours that can be spread in these situations.
- Before a volcanic eruption, there is a gradual increase in seismic activity, which can last a long time and be felt by the population, so stay calm.
- You should be aware of the communication network in the area where you live, from main roads to secondary roads, as well as the travel times for evacuation to a meeting point or family home outside the risk areas.
- If you notice any significant changes (noise, gas, ash, changes in water levels in wells, small earth tremors, etc.), you should inform the Emergency and Security Coordination Centre CECOES 1-1-2.
- Pack what you need in case the evacuation of certain areas is ordered, a light carry-on bag, a mobile phone with charger, personal medication and important documents.
- If you live with people with reduced mobility who require a special evacuation (ambulance), inform the social affairs department of your municipality.
- Remember that 1-1-2 is a Canary Islands government telephone number for emergencies. If you need general information about the situation, you should call 0-12 or ask the media.
