MARSILI: VOLCÁN POTENCIALMENTE PELIGROSO BAJO EL MAR MEDITERRÁNEO

En las profundidades del mar Mediterráneo se encuentra el mayor volcán de Europa, considerado «potencialmente peligroso«. Marsili, en el mar Tirreno, al norte de Sicilia. Y, aunque lleva varios miles de años en silencio, no está precisamente dormido.
El volcán más grande de Europa
Su tamaño es realmente impresionante, ya que el cono volcánico se eleva unos 3.000 metros sobre el lecho marino y su cima alcanza sólo 450 metros bajo la superficie del mar. Su base tiene 70 kilómetros de longitud y una superficie total de 2.100 kilómetros cuadrados, lo que equivale aproximadamente al tamaño de la isla de Tenerife.
Posible deslizamiento de tierra que provoque un tsunami
Los expertos coinciden en considerarlo un volcán potencialmente peligroso ya que sería capaz de generar un tsunami de 20 metros de altura que afectaría a las costas del mar Tirreno.
La última erupción del volcán se produjo hace unos miles de años. En la actualidad, su actividad sigue siendo perceptible, pero se limita a suaves estruendos, con emisiones gaseosas y temblores de baja energía.
Se ha comprobado que presenta una importante inestabilidad, especialmente en una parte de su cima, que está formada por rocas de baja densidad, fuertemente debilitadas por la acción hidrotermal presente en la zona.
Por tanto, no se descarta un desprendimiento de grandes proporciones, que generaría este hipotético tsunami.
El INGV señala que, en caso de erupción, la única señal que sería visible en la superficie sería la de agua hirviendo, relacionada con la emisión de gases del cono, como ocurrió en octubre de 2011 en la isla de El Hierro, en Canarias.
