Ol Doinyo Lengai, que en maasai significa «Montaña de Dios«, es el único volcán que emite la llamada «lava blanca». Se encuentra al sur de Lago Natron, en el extremo sur del brazo oriental del Gran Valle del Rift, en el noroeste de Tanzania.
Es el único volcán activo con una composición de lava carbonatada. «Natro-carbonatita», una lava rica en carbonato de sodio y potasio después de la emisión, ve la alteración de estos minerales con la humedad que blanquea la superficie de la lava. Con una viscosidad muy cercana al agua, su lava es la más fluida del mundo, y también la más fría, con temperaturas de sólo 590º Celsius. Al enfriarse, la lava se vuelve completamente blanca. Este paisaje único de un volcán de lava blanca y el origen de su composición, las huellas de los sucesivos colapsos y las avalanchas de escombros son objeto de numerosos estudios científicos.

Estudios recientes muestran la posibilidad de futuros colapsos y, por tanto, la necesidad de una vigilancia continua.
