Las erupciones volcánicas son uno de los agentes de cambio más espectaculares y violentos de la Tierra. Las erupciones pueden alterar radicalmente la biodiversidad alrededor de un volcán, pero también a nivel global en la estratosfera cambiando el clima de nuestro planeta. Las erupciones suelen obligar a las personas que viven cerca de los volcanes a abandonar sus tierras y hogares, a veces para siempre. Los que viven más lejos tienen una buena oportunidad de evitar la destrucción total, pero sus ciudades y pueblos, cultivos, instalaciones industriales, sistemas de transporte y redes eléctricas pueden seguir siendo dañados por la tefra, la ceniza, los lahares y las inundaciones.
