UNDERWATER VOLCANOES
MUCH CLOSER THAN YOU THOUGHT
MUCH CLOSER THAN YOU THOUGHT
One of the most beautiful contradictions of our planet: water and fire together.
Underwater volcanoes occur when there is a fissure in the ocean floor through which magma can erupt. Like land-based volcanoes, an underwater volcano can spew out magma as well as vapours and gases.
Scientists estimate that there are thousands of active submarine volcanoes around the world, which expel approximately 75% of their annual magma. In addition, undersea volcanic eruptions contribute to the creation of new crust.
Most submarine volcanoes occur in areas where oceanic plates diverge, such as the Atlantic ridge. A small percentage of submarine volcanoes are independent of the divergent zones, and occur because of the well-known hot spots, as is the case of the Hawaiian Islands, where there is a fixed point through which magma comes out and the Earth’s crust moves over it creating new volcanoes, hence, for example, the Hawaiian Islands are aligned.
A good indicator that there is volcanic activity in the area is the presence of fumaroles or hydrothermal vents, which indicate that this is an area where magma is relatively close to the earth’s surface, so it is very likely that a submarine volcano exists in the vicinity.
The type of submarine volcano and eruption depends very much on the depth at which it is located, as pressure is a very important factor.
Eruptions can be sporadic or continuous over time; if they are continuous and have been so for a long time, the volcanic materials end up rising to the surface and creating new islands, as is the case of Iceland, which is located just above the Atlantic ridge.
Hawaii, Iceland, Japan and Spain.
In Spain, the Canary Islands are full of volcanoes, most of which are extinct. But within the archipelago, the island of El Hierro is the most active and last 2011 an underwater volcano, very close to the coast of the island, erupted. The eruption lasted approximately five months and during the course of the eruption, vapours could be seen on the surface, numerous fragments of pumice stone and a change in the colour of the water due to the chemical compounds emitted by the volcano.
