BUILDING A COMMON FUTURE
The UN Global Compact is a solidarity initiative that aims to transform the global business sector. It aims to promote a sustainable and responsible private sector by encouraging companies and organisations to align their strategies with ten universal principles, covering human rights, environment, anti-corruption and labour. It is also mandated by the UN to raise awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the private sector.
IN THE AREA OF LABOUR STANDARDS, THERE ARE FOUR PRINCIPLES :
HUMAN RIGHTS
In the area of Human Rights, the Global Compact has Principles 1 and 2. These two principles state that entities should support and respect the protection of fundamental human rights in their sphere of influence and ensure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses. To comply with this, organizations are encouraged to take measures and create actions in support of human rights.
LABOUR
– Principle 3: Organizations must support freedom of association and the recognition of the right to collective bargaining; so that employers and employees are free to form associations and trade unions and there is a voluntary process to reach a collective agreement.
– Principle 4: Organizations should support the elimination of all forms of forced labour, which is obtained through threats or coercion rather than voluntarily.
– Principle 5: Organizations must support the elimination of child labour, as it is a form of exploitation that is a violation of human rights.
– Principle 6: Businesses should support the elimination of discrimination in the workplace, whether based on race, colour, sex, religion, political opinion, nationality or social origin.
ENVIRONMENT
– Principle 7: Entities must maintain a preventive approach that favors the environment. To this end, risk assessment, risk management and risk communication systems must be established.
– Principle 8: Businesses should promote more environmentally responsible initiatives by increasing self-regulation and establishing integrated regulations and initiatives across the business.
– Principle 9: Organizations should support the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies, i.e. those that pollute less, recycle more, use resources in a sustainable way, etc.
ANTI-CORRUPTION
Finally, in the fight against corruption, the Global Compact has established Principle 10, which states that companies should fight corruption in all its forms by developing concrete policies and programs.
Since 2021 VOLCANO ACTIVE FOUNDATION has been committed to the UN Global Compact corporate responsibility initiative and its principles in the areas of human rights, labour, the environment and anti-corruption.
