DISASTERS ARE NOT NATURAL, they are socially built, due to lack of preparation, prevention, mitigation work, education and monitoring. They are natural risks or hazards that impact vulnerable societies. Knowledge help reducing social and structural vulnerability in order to have more resilient societies!
Be aware of volcanic hazards.
Make a plan and make sure everyone in your family knows what to do in an emergency.
Determine the responsibilities of each member of your household.
Choose meeting places and an emergency contact person outside the area.
Plan what you will do if you have to evacuate, decide where you will go and what route you will take to get there. You may choose to go to a hotel/motel, stay with friends or relatives in a safe place or go to an evacuation shelter if necessary.
In case of imminent danger, it is important to find a safe place and stay there.
Build and maintain a disaster supply kit.
Make sure the following non-standard items are included in your kit to live safely and more comfortably around active volcanoes:
A recommended paint or breathing mask and protective eyewear for working outdoors in volcanic ash.
For people with existing breathing difficulties, additional medication and oxygen are needed for living in dusty or ashy conditions.
Spare contact lenses, cleaning solution, glasses.
Plastic and tape to prevent ash from entering your home in case of extreme ash fall.
