BUILDING RISK KNOWLEDGE
WHY THE FOUNDATION WAS BORN? >
WHY THE FOUNDATION WAS BORN? >
DISASTERS ARE NOT NATURAL, they are socially built, due to lack of preparation, prevention, mitigation work, education and monitoring. They are natural risks or hazards that impact vulnerable societies. Knowledge help reducing social and structural vulnerability in order to have more resilient societies!
Eruptive activity can increase and decrease for weeks or even years after the start of the eruptive cycle.
The actions to be taken after an eruptive event depend on whether the eruption continues, the level of impact and the type of eruption. The most important thing to do is to watch and listen for updates from local authorities; they will determine when to lift or revise evacuation orders and organise relief efforts.
Volcanic ash
Do not rush into the clean-up operation without a plan; read the resources on proper ash removal and disposal techniques.
Avoid clean-up until the ash has stopped falling, and use a ‘top-down, downwind’ method to avoid recontamination of cleaned areas.
Keep driving to a minimum to avoid damage to vehicles. Driving on ash-covered roads with reduced visibility can be dangerous.
Have clean-up resources on hand, such as dust masks, extra medication, plastic sheeting and heavy-duty tape.
Lava flows
Lava flows usually move slowly enough that local authorities have issued evacuation notices. Roads can be blocked by lava, so it is important to find alternative ways to get back into a flooded area once the all clear has been given. Be aware of closures and instructions from local authorities.
Until a lahar deposit solidifies, the thick mud cannot support much weight. Do not attempt to cross a lahar in a vehicle and be careful when crossing the deposit on foot. As it moves downstream, the lahar may incorporate sharp metal and other hazardous materials. Use gloves and tools to clean up lahar debris. Be aware that lahar sediment will be remobilised by rain and normal river drainage for years after a volcanic event, which can lead to destructive flooding.
Actions to take for ashfall include cleaning up vehicles. Clean windshield wipers before using them to avoid scratching the windshield.
