BUILDING RISK KNOWLEDGE
WHY THE FOUNDATION WAS BORN? >
WHY THE FOUNDATION WAS BORN? >
DISASTERS ARE NOT NATURAL, they are socially built, due to lack of preparation, prevention, mitigation work, education and monitoring. They are natural risks or hazards that impact vulnerable societies. Knowledge help reducing social and structural vulnerability in order to have more resilient societies!
There are signs that a volcano may erupt, but the time between the first signs of unrest and eruptive activity can be short, from days to weeks or months. The key is to detect the early signals of volcanic unrest in order to warn communities at risk and give officials time to activate emergency response plans and mitigation measures that can save lives and protect property. Because eruptions typically go through episodic cycles of increased activity and relative calm after they begin, scientists monitor volcanic behaviour very closely to determine when it is safe to declare an eruption complete.
The role of field scientists:
Scientists assess volcano hazards, assist in the development of volcano coordination plans, monitor volcanic activity, issue warnings of impending eruptions, and provide eruption updates via a formal notification system.
Role of local governments and public officials:
Public officials ensure the safety of their communities by developing and exercising emergency plans and providing hazard education and notification of local hazards and emergency procedures. During volcanic activity, they are the ones who inform residents of closures, evacuation routes and recovery recommendations.
Your role :
Everyone can get through a volcanic event with more safety and less disruption by 1) learning about the hazards where they live or travel, 2) following local recommendations to ensure households and businesses are prepared, and 3) preparing to be self-sufficient for a fortnight by making a contingency plan and building an emergency kit.
Promoting disclosure to children.
60% of active volcanoes do not have scientific monitoring systems, governments do not take into account the important role of fieldwork and risk communication.
